Junior Open, Testimonal Texas Scramble & Adult & Junior Results

It’s been a busy week at the Club, with competitions running alongside lots of general play due to the school holidays.  That’s kept the greens team busy to say the least, but the course has continued to be in superb condition, despite some heavy rain.

Anyway, onto the results from these competitions.  Thursday saw the Junior Open taking place, with honours going to Liam McLarty of Dumfries & County Golf Club with a stunning net 55 playing off of 27 – we suspect the Junior Convenor at D&C will be taking a slice off of Liam’s handicap.  On the subject of Dumfries, it was great to see a coachload of youngsters coming up to support our competition, building on the long-standing relationship we have with the folks down there – thanks to Douglas Alison and the other parents for organising that – it’s greatly appreciated.

Congratulations are also due to Craig Tibbetts, who retained his scratch title with a 71 – and a buffer zone – it’s a tough school!

Saturday brought the Gordon Law Testimonial Texas Scramble (try saying that quickly),with a full field of 48 teams made up of sponsors, members, members’ guests and invited guests, some of whom had dusted off the clubs especially for the day – a set comprising a Ping Eye 1-iron and Swilken 2-SW was spotted in the morning!

Gordon has asked us to pass on his appreciation for all of the support he’s had to make the day go so well.

Scoring was top-notch with both morning and afternoon flights close-run affairs. The results were as follows: –

Morning Event

M. McAllister / D. Gilbert / T. O’Hara / S. Lockhart 55.6

B. Saunders / J. McManus / S. Armstrong / R. Kerr 55.8

S. Grady / W. Mackintosh-Jnr / R. Middleton / T. Robb 56.4

Afternoon Event

C. Bavidge / S. Gemmell / C. Frame / S. McKinnon 54.3

K. McKinnon / M. Whelan / C. Mighton / A. Moffat 54.4

A. Thomson / M. McDonald / A. Wilson / J. Fairgrieve 55.6

Gordon took part in the afternoon and afterwards was tight-lipped about his performance!  That, despite having the services of his good friend and European Tour player, Craig Lee, as his caddy – interestingly, Gordon was using his pencil bag, presumably because Craig would have had something to say if he’d produced the Tour Bag!

There were presentations after each of the events and thanks go to everyone who helped (too many to mention) make things go so well, with almost 200 people to be checked in, meal orders taken and directions given to find starting holes, never mind the intricacies of the handicaps!

Kate Stevenson was out and about taking photographs and also took a couple of “team fotaes” – we’ll be posting some of these later in the week.  Many thanks Kate.

Saturday was rounded off with a “This is Your Life” feature presented by Jim Saunders and Joe McManus, with a cameo appearance from Evelyn, which took us through Gordon’s life and times from childhood to the present day. Again, thanks to everyone who helped bring this together, although we’re not so sure that Gordon would thank whoever released the photos from his younger days!

Finishing the week was the Adult & Junior competition which was contested by 10 teams in testing conditions to say the least.  The winners were Junior Convenor Peter MacMillan and Euan Valentine – congratulations.
